R.275 MODERN HOUSE TWO STOREY HOUSE KIT INSTRUCTION MANUAL

An unassuming building in Kent epitomised late twentieth century housing for model railway manufacturer Hornby and embodies an archetype of the ubiquitous standardisation and suburban uniformity of the 1970s. I tracked the building down to a cul-de-sac in Margate and produced a series of photographs. At first seemingly ordinary and lacking character the process reveals individual details and idiosyncrasies of the building. The project based on the Hornby scale model kit ‘R.275 Modern House’ includes various depictions of the semi-detached house and the model brought together to form an archive of components, a ‘kit of parts' with instructions to construct a sense of contemporary suburban life.
