ULTRAMARINE

Ultramarine #4

Archive studio photographs chemically and physically deteriorated using sea-water, sunlight and liquids that accelerate celluloid decay. The images depict a body of water showing signs of deterioration—its surface scratched, cut, sometimes hole-punched or burned—mirroring the slow, inevitable changes made by time. These interventions on medium format film disrupt the two-dimensional surface, foregrounding the material instability of photographic media, and offer a metaphor for human ageing: the gradual erosion, fragility, and resilience of the body and memory.

The name Ultramarine, derived from Latin meaning “beyond the sea,” signals both a physical and metaphorical journey: these viscous, deep-blue images evoke the beauty and terror of ageing and a sense of the unknown, inviting contemplation on time and decay.
