ULTRAMARINE

Deep blue analogue film image, seascape with a sphere or orb above a horizon line

Following a move from city to coast, these photographic works are my response to the shift in landscape depicting new territories beyond the sea. Studio photographs on medium format film are chemically and physically deteriorated using sea-water, sunlight and liquids that accelerate celluloid decay. The film's surface is cut, sometimes hole-punched or burned adding texture and depth.

The process explores overlapping areas in photography, painting and collage resulting in work that challenges conventions and draws on pictorial representations of land, sea and sky from impressionism, abstraction and the romantic sublime. The name Ultramarine is derived from the Latin meaning 'beyond the sea’. Like staring towards an uncertain horizon these viscous deep blue images evoke a sense of the unknown inviting a slow contemplation on time and decay.

This is work in progress, please drop me line to find out more or pop back soon for updates.
